Program Overview
This course focuses on the specific operational and human-centric needs of patients with Limited English Proficiency (LEP). Rather than focusing solely on legal compliance, this program addresses the "last mile" of care: how to ensure effective clinical communication, patient education, and health literacy support for non-native speakers. The goal is to standardize the patient experience to ensure that language never becomes a barrier to quality clinical outcomes.
Module 1: Health Literacy & The LEP Patient Topics: Assessing "Functional Health Literacy"; The impact of the "Explain-Back" method in non-native speakers; Visual communication tools in clinical settings.
Module 2: The Logistics of Language Access Topics: Standardized workflows for identifying language needs at check-in; Managing VRI/OPI equipment in bedside care; Creating "Language-Friendly" environments.
Module 3: Cultural Nuances in Information Gathering Topics: Understanding how cultural norms regarding authority figures can lead to "agreement" as a form of politeness rather than understanding; Techniques for identifying when an LEP patient is confused but unwilling to admit it.
Module 4: Patient Education & Discharge Planning Topics: Translating discharge summaries for readability (Plain Language vs. Literal Translation); Best practices for using visual aids and multi-modal instructions (audio/video/diagrams) in discharge teaching.
Learning Objectives

Requirements
- Workflow Audit: Develop a one-page "Language Workflow" map for your specific department, showing how a patient is identified as LEP and how an interpreter is secured.
- Plain Language Translation: Take one complex clinical form (e.g., a post-op instruction sheet) and rewrite it using "Plain Language" principles for a 6th-grade reading level
- Teach-Back Demonstration: Submit a short video or transcript role-playing a "Teach-Back" session with an LEP patient (utilizing an interpreter).
- Final Proficiency Assessment: A 20-question quiz focusing on health literacy principles and the operational logistics of the LEP workflow.
