Recovery-Oriented Systems of Care (ROSC)

Systems-Leadership Seminar (Interactive Asset Mapping + Theory Review)

Program Overview

This course facilitates a paradigm shift from an acute, episodic model of "stabilization" to a long-term, holistic model of "sustained wellness." It emphasizes that recovery is a process, not an event, and occurs within the context of a community. Participants will learn to integrate "Recovery Capital" and Peer Support Services into traditional clinical structures to improve long-term outcomes and patient quality of life.

  1. The 4 Dimensions of Recovery (SAMHSA) Core Concept: Moving beyond symptom reduction.

Focus Areas: 1. Health: Overcoming/managing disease. 2. Home: Stable and safe housing. 3. Purpose: Meaningful daily activities (work, school, family). 4. Community: Relationships and social networks that provide support.

  1. Peer Support & Lived Experience Core Concept: The unique value of the Peer Specialist.

Focus Areas: Integrating Certified Peer Recovery Specialists (CPRS) into the clinical team; understanding the "Non-Clinical" role; and supervising/supporting peer roles to avoid burnout and boundary issues.

  1. Recovery Capital & Asset Mapping Core Concept: Leveraging internal and external resources.

Focus Areas: Assessing a patient’s "Recovery Capital" (social, physical, human, and cultural assets); conducting "Community Asset Mapping" to identify non-traditional supports like faith groups, fitness communities, and recovery cafes.

  1. Sustained Management vs. Acute Intervention Core Concept: The "Chronic Care" model for behavioral health.

Focus Areas: Designing long-term "Recovery Management Checkups" (RMC); moving away from the "Revolving Door" of crisis care; and fostering patient-led advocacy.

Learning Objectives

  • Define the core values and principles of a Recovery-Oriented System of Care.
  • Distinguish between clinical treatment (stabilization) and recovery support (long-term wellness).
  • Integrate Peer Support Specialists effectively within a multidisciplinary care team.
  • Assess a patient’s "Recovery Capital" to build a more robust, sustainable discharge plan.

Requirements

  • Community Asset Map: Create a visual or descriptive map of ten non-clinical recovery resources within a 15-mile radius of your facility.
  • Peer Integration Proposal: Draft a one-page "Workflow Integration Plan" explaining how a Peer Specialist would interact with a patient from intake to discharge.
  • Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) Draft: Co-create a mock WRAP with a colleague that focuses on patient-led crisis triggers and wellness tools.
  • Final Assessment: A 15-question quiz focusing on the 4 dimensions of recovery and the philosophical differences between ROSC and traditional acute care.
